Bampton is known as both a village and a town and also has a second name – Bampton-in-the-Bush, and there’s no debate about its beauty. Fans of Downton Abbey may recognise the church and library which feature in several of the hit TV series’ outdoor scenes. The village is famous for its Morris Dancing traditions celebrated each late May Bank Holiday at Bampton Day of Dance. And whilst enjoying a drink in one of the fabulous local inns, you may come across a team from the Aunt Sally league – a traditional throwing game played predominantly in pubs in Oxfordshire.
During your stay in a cottage in Bampton, we highly recommend a visit to nearby Aston Pottery, where you can see the skilled artisans at work during a pottery demonstration and then purchase their goods in the on-site gift shop. Immerse your senses in a tour of their gardens; they flower from April through to September and attract the rare Black Bumble Bee in July and August. The gardens were visited by BBC Gardeners’ World in the summer of 2020, and have featured in countless articles in magazines and National Newspapers. Not to be missed is a stop at their award-winning café where visitors are spoilt for choice with a wide variety of hot savoury food and delicious cakes, scones and biscuits.
A short 15 minute drive from Bampton will take you to Kilkenny Lane Country Park, set within 50 acres and featuring over 2km of pushchair friendly footpaths. The adventure playground will keep young visitors entertained before stopping for a picnic in its open green spaces.
Visitors to Bampton will be glad to retire back to their home from home Cotswold holiday cottage, where they can switch off and relax in their comfortable surroundings. Friday night fish and chips can be enjoyed in the peace and quiet of your holiday home, and guests looking to eat out can choose from a great selection of village pubs and restaurants.
