Smuggsbarn Cottage is a beautifully styled Grade II listed Cotswold holiday cottage which sleeps 6+2 guests, in three comfortable bedrooms, with the +2 option being a double sofa bed in the snug, with two contemporary bathrooms. This cottage has been tastefully renovated to blend the charming late 18th century original features of the English beech wooden beams and striking Cotswold stone inglenook fireplace, with modern decor and amenities. With ample living space downstairs, including the cosy snug and abundant storage in both the kitchen and the boot room, Smuggsbarn Cottage is a real home away from home with plenty of space for the whole group to relax. Every detail has been thoughtfully considered, down to a dog showering area for those muddy walks, creating a wonderful property for groups to escape to the country with your four legged friend!

StayCotswold is a marketing agent and therefore does not own any of the cottages listed on our website. In terms of cleaning and maintenance, the properties within our portfolio are managed by a third party property manager or the property owner – your pre-arrival email will contain confirmation and contact details for the person managing your property. Bookings made via us form a legal agreement directly between you and the property owner.

For bookings commencing more than 8 weeks in advance, a 30% non-refundable deposit is required to confirm the booking. The balance payment is then due 8 weeks prior to arrival.

All payments are made subject to the cancellation policy set out in the standard Booking Conditions.

Location Information

With much of Chedworth being deemed a conservation area, many of the houses are traditional Cotswold stone cottage style homes, allowing the village to retain its charm. This chocolate box style village benefits from a friendly pub, The Seven Tuns Inn, offering a delicious menu. The village is located on the steep side of a valley along the tributary of the River Coln. This wonderful location makes Chedworth ideal for those wanting to explore the countryside with multiple footpaths in and around the area including the Macmillan Way and the Monarch's Way. One of our favourites is a snippet of the Macmillan Way to the nearby Chedworth Roman Villa, managed by the National Trust, then heading on through Chedworth woods before returning back to the village.

For your shopping essentials, there is a Waitrose in Cirencester. Most larger supermarkets do offer delivery to this area.
Chedworth sits in South Cotswolds, just eight miles from Cirencester and 11 miles from Cheltenham. The much-loved towns of Stroud, Northleach and Withington are also within easy reach. As are the popular attractions of Cerney House, Sherbourne Park Estate and the village of Bibury.

The Finer Details

The maximum occupancy for this property is 8 guests. Infants do not count towards the occupancy figure, however, due to space restrictions the occupancy can only be exceeded by 3 additional infants (aged 2 or under)
Bed linen and towels are provided (duvets and pillows are hypoallergenic)
Off street parking is available for up to 2 cars, additional parking is available at the village hall a short walk away
1 travel cot, 1 highchair, 1 toddler Tripp Trapp chair and 2 stair gates are available on request (please bring your own linen for the travel cot, as this is not provided)

Please note that the principal bedroom can be accessed directly from the sitting room, with no door separating the spaces (these stairs are especially steep, though a bannister on one side is provided)
The smoke and CO detectors operate on a sound only basis and, therefore, those who have serious impairment of hearing may not be able to hear the alarm systems and could be at risk
No smoking or vaping is permitted throughout the property

Two failed attempts to communication with the manager before arrival - email/telephone. The agents could inform the property manager of the email address of the client to avoid Spam folder issues (if they don't already). A multi zone heating system is much too complicated for people arriving after a long journey to grapple with. Some of the zones were set for 16 deg between 9am and 5pm as if we were going out to work during the day! Consideration must be given to babies/ the elderly/infirm who sleep/rest during the day. Old buildings with thick stone walls only retain heat if they are continuously heated in winter. They are not suited to on/off heating. 16 deg is too cold as a set back temperature for this type of property. Having the thermostat for half the property in a non communal area is not a sensible design. In general, luxury holiday properties in winter should be heated all over from c.6am to c.10pm

Thank you Annette for your review of Smuggsbarn Cottage. When a booking is placed with StayCotswold, the guest contact details are automatically sent to the property manager. We are sorry to hear that you were unable to contact your property manager before arriving at the property. Sometimes the phone signal in the Cotswolds can be intermittent and the property manager may be in an area with a bad signal, if she is left a voicemail she will call you back. The property owner has confirmed that there are fully detailed instructions for the heating system in the property information folder in the property. The property manager would have been able to assist you with any issues you experienced during your stay and resolved them quickly. From data received by the owners they can see that the temperature in the cottage during your stay was between 19 and 23 degrees and the thermostat settings are from 06:30-22:00. There is a thermostat in the kitchen area that is set to 23 degrees and it appears that you were able to increase the temperature setting on Friday and Saturday morning. If you book this cottage beware of the small print. A £250 deposit was put on my credit card on hold then on the day of departure the whole £250 was taken from my card due to 2 minor mud prints out of the duvet cover (which they apparently they couldn't get out even with bleach and a 90 degree wash!) I was charged £46.89 for replacements. I was not sent the receipt. The remainder of the deposit didn't go back on my card for over 7 days. The cottage is meant to be dog friendly but dogs are not allowed upstairs but when you arrive the stair gates are open therefore the dogs run upstairs! Make sure you take towels for the dogs. The entrance lock is defective and needs changing it took us 15 mins to get the key to work in the dark. Other guests have mentioned this . Checkin time is 17h00 and departure time is 10h00. The parking is at the side of the road not ideal for big cars or animals or small children.

Upon placing your booking with StayCotswolds you confirmed that you had read the finer details for the property. The owners are delighted to be able to welcome dogs so that they can also enjoy a wonderful country getaway with their families. Guests should bring their own dog bed from home and expect to provide their own towel and poo bags. There is a shower in the boot room at the property to clean muddy paws and the owners will consider providing towels for the dogs in the future. Stay Cotswolds team and the friendly property manager, Claire are available to support you during your stay if you had any issues. After your departure from the property we were informed by the property manager of the muddy paw prints on the bedlinen and that they would attempt to remove the stains, however ingrained mud is very difficult to remove from bedlinen, even after several washes at a high temperature. Unfortunately, they were unsuccessful at removing the stains and the housekeeping team provided StayCotswold with a receipt for replacing the damaged items and £46.89 was taken from your security deposit. There is a retractable stairgate provided at the property to prevent dogs from going upstairs. StayCotswold pet rules apply at the property and these can be found in the finer details of the property, it clearly states that pets are not allowed on the furniture or in the bedrooms/bathroom areas of the house, dogs must be kept downstairs area only. Please do not leave pets unattended in or outside at any time. Please clean up after your pet(s) if they use the garden or drive areas. Please ensure that when you leave there are no traces (inside or out) that pets have been staying in the property. Please be considerate of residents in the area don't let your dog(s) bark excessively. We will pass your feedback onto the property manager regarding the door lock and ask them to rectify this for future guests.

Smuggsbarn cottage is in a beautiful village and very well placed for visiting all the area has to offer. We were a family of 5 adults, a 15 mth old baby and a dog and there was plenty of room for all of us. The cottage is a good size; comfortable and cosy. The kitchen was very well equipped and there were some nice touches in the cottage such as the boot room with a dog shower. We loved having the Wii for some family fun in the evenings. We liked the quirky staircase from living room to bedroom 1 although not necessarily suitable for anyone with mobility issues. The garden was lovely and it was a shame we couldn't enjoy it due to rain most of our stay but then we did visit in late September. Booking was easy and communication ahead of our visit was efficient and informative. We had a slight issue with leaking in the boot room on arrival but this was due to torrential rain and it is an old building. We reported it to the managing agents who were quick to respond. It didn't occur again during our stay. There are some lovely walks from the cottage and some nice places to eat within a short drive. It's a shame the local pub had shut down as it would have been nice to be able to walk somewhere to eat but we understand there are plans for this to be reopened in the future. We very much enjoyed our stay at Smuggsbarn and would happily return.
